Thanks, John. I was giving a PR presentation this week at a law firm where we were talking about the very point you make. We often look online for more information when it comes to making vendor decisions. It is reasonable that potential legal clients would adopt the same approach when it comes to choosing an attorney. It may not be the only factor but the online presence will likely be one the factors weighed.

This article describes my own recent experience. Nearly all of my work comes from direct referral. But I recently launched a website for my practice (that I've been postponing for some time) because I realized that my own buying decisions were strongly affected by whether the vendor was appropriately represented online. Applying the same standard to myself, I realized that I was likely missing opportunities when referrals could find little about my practice on the Internet. Now I'm making the same point to others that some potential customers will question their legitimacy if they can't be found online.

Thanks, Elizabeth. For most people, hiring an attorney is a very significant event in their lives. I think it is only natural to want to know more about the person you're choosing to be your advocate and counselor. The Internet is one tool people use to gather information. It may not be the only tool or even the primary tool but it is something that will likely be used.

This article makes several excellent points. As lawyers, we often forget that people who are unfamiliar with the legal profession and are looking for a lawyer will generally use the same Internet techniques that they use to find a good restaurant or hotel. They look to Google and sites with recommendations or referrals.
